The "eight glasses a day" rule has no scientific basis. And chasing it with plain filtered water can leave you more dehydrated, not less.

It sounds backward. Drink more water, end up drier. But once you see how water actually crosses into a cell, the eight-glasses ritual stops looking like health advice and starts looking like a rule somebody invented.

Drink eight glasses of water a day. You have heard it your whole life. It is printed on bottles, repeated by trainers, quoted as settled fact. There is one problem. When a physiologist went looking for the study behind it, he could not find one. No origin. No data. And the deeper question nobody asks is worse: what if the plain, stripped-down water most people now drink runs straight through them and takes their electrolytes with it?

Where the rule came from

A number nobody can source

In 2002, Heinz Valtin, a kidney physiologist, published a review in the American Journal of Physiology with a blunt title and a blunter conclusion.1 He went hunting for the scientific evidence behind "drink at least eight glasses of water a day." He found none.

No study. No trial. No physiological basis for that specific number for healthy people in a temperate climate doing normal activity. Valtin's review concluded the opposite of the folklore: thirst and a varied diet already cover the water a healthy body needs, and much of your daily water arrives in food and other drinks, not in counted glasses.

So the famous rule is a guess that hardened into gospel. That alone should make you suspicious of how confidently you have been counting glasses.

The closest thing to an origin is a 1945 nutrition note suggesting roughly 2.5 liters of water a day for an adult, with a line right after it most people never quote: "most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods." How water actually gets into you

Here is the piece almost nobody is taught. Water does not soak into your cells just because it is in your stomach. It has to be pulled across the gut wall and into the body, and minerals do the pulling.

Two versions of the next two months
