It sounds backward. Drink more water, end up drier. But once you see how water actually crosses into a cell, the eight-glasses ritual stops looking like health advice and starts looking like a rule somebody invented.
Drink eight glasses of water a day. You have heard it your whole life. It is printed on bottles, repeated by trainers, quoted as settled fact. There is one problem. When a physiologist went looking for the study behind it, he could not find one. No origin. No data. And the deeper question nobody asks is worse: what if the plain, stripped-down water most people now drink runs straight through them and takes their electrolytes with it?
That is the open loop of this piece. By the end you will know why "more water" can dehydrate you at the cellular level, and what actually fixes it. The answer is not a bigger bottle.
Start with the rule itself.
Where the rule came from
In 2002, Heinz Valtin, a kidney physiologist, published a review in the American Journal of Physiology with a blunt title and a blunter conclusion.1 He went hunting for the scientific evidence behind "drink at least eight glasses of water a day." He found none.
No study. No trial. No physiological basis for that specific number for healthy people in a temperate climate doing normal activity. Valtin's review concluded the opposite of the folklore: thirst and a varied diet already cover the water a healthy body needs, and much of your daily water arrives in food and other drinks, not in counted glasses.
So the famous rule is a guess that hardened into gospel. That alone should make you suspicious of how confidently you have been counting glasses.
Trace its history and it gets stranger. The closest thing to an origin is a 1945 nutrition note suggesting roughly 2.5 liters of water a day for an adult, with a line right after it most people never quote: "most of this quantity is contained in prepared foods." The food clause got dropped. The number survived, lost its context, and turned into a command to drink eight separate glasses on top of everything else you eat and drink. A footnote became a law.
But the number is the small problem. The big one is what is in the glass.
Eight glasses says nothing about what the water contains. It treats every glass as equal. Physiologically, a glass of mineral-stripped water and a glass of mineral-rich water behave like two different liquids inside the body.
Here is the piece almost nobody is taught. Water does not soak into your cells just because it is in your stomach. It has to be pulled across the gut wall and into the body, and minerals do the pulling.
The clearest proof sits in emergency medicine. When someone is severely dehydrated, the treatment that saved millions of lives is oral rehydration: water mixed with sodium and a little glucose. The reason it works is a mechanism called sodium-glucose co-transport.2 Sodium and glucose get absorbed together across the gut lining, and water follows them by osmosis. The minerals open the door. The water walks through.
Plain water has no door to open.
Inside the body the same physics rules every cell. Water moves toward where the dissolved minerals are. Sodium, potassium, magnesium, and chloride create the osmotic gradient that draws water into a cell and holds it there. Strip the minerals out and you have removed the gradient. The water has nothing telling it to stay. A meaningful share of it passes through and leaves in your urine.
Read the difference plainly. Minerals are not a nice-to-have floating in your water. They are the mechanism that turns water you swallowed into water your cells actually keep.
Picture two glasses going into the same person an hour apart. The first is mineral-rich. Its dissolved sodium, potassium, and magnesium ride across the gut wall, and water follows them into circulation and into the cells, where the same ions hold it in place. That water gets used. The second glass is mineral-stripped. There is no gradient to ride, so a larger share moves through the gut, into the blood thin and unanchored, past the kidneys, and out. Same volume swallowed. Two completely different fates inside the body.
This is why hydration is not a number you reach by counting. It is a transaction. Water plus minerals gets absorbed and held. Water alone gets a quick pass and an exit. The eight-glasses rule measures only the half you can see going in, and stays silent on the half that decides whether any of it stays.
Now the backward-sounding claim makes sense.
The World Health Organization reviewed the health effects of drinking demineralized water, the kind produced by reverse osmosis and distillation.3 One finding lands directly on the eight-glasses ritual. Drinking low-mineral water increases urine output and steps up the elimination of electrolytes from the body, including sodium, potassium, and chloride. The review also notes water has historically supplied a real share of daily magnesium and calcium intake, a contribution mineral-stripped water erases.
Sit with what that means in practice.
You drink a glass of demineralized water. It carries almost nothing to hold itself in place, so more of it heads for the exit. On the way out it flushes electrolytes you already had. So you drink another glass to feel hydrated. That one flushes more. Eight glasses of flat, mineral-empty water can move you toward a thinner electrolyte balance, not a fuller one.
Chasing eight glasses of mineral-stripped water is like trying to fill a bucket with the drain open. The harder you pour, the more you lose with it.
There is a second cost the volume habit hides. Every extra glass of empty water you push through asks your kidneys to process and dump it, and the electrolytes that leave with it have to be replaced from somewhere. If the next glass is also empty, the body borrows from its own stores. People who pride themselves on drinking the most water are often the ones quietly running their electrolyte balance lean, then wondering why more water never seems to fix the dry, flat feeling.
This is not an argument against water. It is an argument against empty water counted by volume. Your grandmother's well water and your great-grandmother's spring water carried minerals in every glass. The water in most kitchens today does not.
For nearly all of human existence, drinking water was a mineral source. Rivers, wells, and springs ran their water over rock and soil, and every glass carried dissolved magnesium, calcium, and a spread of trace elements straight into the body. Hydration and trace minerals arrived together because they always had.
Then water treatment got very, very good.
Reverse osmosis, distillation, and most bottled water push water through membranes fine enough to block almost everything larger than a water molecule. That is excellent for removing contaminants. The result is a genuine first. The water in millions of kitchens right now is the most mineral-poor water any human generation has ever drunk at scale. We made water cleaner than ever and, in the same stroke, emptier than ever. Nobody set out to do it. Purity was the goal, and the minerals rode out on the same current.
There is also a reason you have never heard any of this, and it is not a conspiracy. It is incentives. The water industry sells volume. Bigger bottles, multipacks, refill subscriptions, the case stacked by the door. Every part of that machine profits when you believe the answer to feeling under-hydrated is to drink more. Nobody in that chain makes a cent telling you the missing piece is minerals, because minerals are not what they are selling. The eight-glasses rule was a gift to an industry built on quantity, and it spread for free.
So the eight-glasses myth and the mineral-stripping of modern water collide at the worst possible moment. The exact era that tells you to drink the most water is the era serving the emptiest water. You are pouring more of the one thing that holds the least.
If minerals are what make water absorb and stay, the fix is not more water. It is putting the minerals back into the water you already drink, in a form the body can actually use.

Notice what those quotes are not. None of them promises a dramatic transformation. A taste change. A bag habit. Feeling normal again. Small, specific, concrete. That is what an honest mineral story sounds like.
