Questions, answered straight
Everything you'd want to ask before you filter
We run an honest filter company in a category built on hype. So here are the real questions, including the ones most brands dodge, with answers we can back up.
Your water
My city says my water meets federal standards. Why would I still filter it? +
Compliant and clean are different claims. Federal limits weigh health against what utilities can afford, so the legal line often sits above what scientists consider safe. Between 2018 and 2023, the Environmental Working Group found 77% of US utilities had at least one contaminant above its health-based guideline while staying fully inside the law. A filter closes the gap between legal and safe at your own tap.
How do I find out what's in my tap water? +
Two free ways. Your utility mails a Consumer Confidence Report once a year and posts it online. The EWG Tap Water Database lets you pull your system by zip code. Send us your zip and we'll read your report with you and tell you which clnwater product your water calls for, or whether it needs nothing at all.
Isn't bottled water cleaner than filtered tap? +
Often it's the same municipal tap water in a plastic bottle, and it can pick up microplastics from the bottle itself. You also pay far more per glass and carry it home. Filtered tap costs pennies a glass and skips the plastic.
Do clnwater filters work for well water, or only city water? +
They're built for municipal water, where the contaminants are predictable and certified standards apply. Private wells vary a lot and can carry bacteria, nitrates, or metals a city would treat at the plant. Test your well first, send us the results, and we'll tell you whether our filters cover it or whether you need well-specific treatment.
The Halo filtering shower head
Do shower filters do anything, or is it marketing? +
A good one reduces the free chlorine and chlorine byproducts in your hot water, the same compounds that strip your skin's barrier and leave hair brittle. That's what ours is built and certified to do. It won't remove lead or PFAS, that's the drinking filter's job, and how much your skin and hair change depends on your water and your body. We say reduces, and we tell you what it won't touch.
Will it wreck my water pressure? +
No. It's tuned for full flow, and most owners say the pressure feels the same or better. Cheap filters trade pressure for filtration. This one doesn't.
Will it soften my hard water or stop limescale? +
No, and any brand claiming a shower filter softens water is misleading you. Softening removes calcium and magnesium, which takes an ion-exchange softener, not a filter. The shower filter reduces chlorine and its byproducts. If hard-water buildup is your real problem, a filter is the wrong tool and we'll say so.
Will it fit my shower, and do I need a plumber? +
It threads onto any standard 1/2 inch shower arm, the fitting nearly every US shower already uses. Tape and washers come in the box. Setup takes about two minutes by hand, no tools and no plumber.
How often do I replace the cartridge, and what does that cost? +
About every 90 days for a typical household. Turn on auto-refill for a fresh cartridge at 15% off, or reorder whenever you like. The advertised price holds with or without a subscription, and you cancel in one click.
The drinking filter
Do your filters remove lead and PFAS, or only improve taste? +
The drinking filter's media is built to NSF/ANSI 53, 401 and P473, which cover lead, PFAS, and emerging contaminants like pharmaceuticals. We say reduces, and we link the certification so you can check the numbers yourself instead of trusting a logo.
How is this different from a Brita pitcher? +
A standard pitcher mostly improves taste. Independent testing shows the basic Brita filter isn't certified to reduce PFAS and does little for lead. clnwater runs your water through four certified stages, so it handles what a taste pitcher leaves behind.
Does it remove fluoride? +
No. Carbon filters, ours included, don't reduce fluoride, because the fluoride ion is too small to hold onto carbon. Taking fluoride out needs reverse osmosis or activated alumina. We'd rather tell you that than sell you a carbon filter on a fluoride promise it can't keep.
My city uses chloramine, not chlorine. Will the filter handle it? +
Most US systems use free chlorine, which our carbon stages reduce well. About one in five Americans gets chloramine, which is chlorine bound to ammonia and needs catalytic carbon to fully break down. If your utility uses chloramine, email us your zip before you buy and we'll tell you straight whether our media is right for your water.
Will it strip the good minerals out like reverse osmosis? +
No. It targets the contaminants and leaves the calcium and magnesium that make water taste like water. There's no remineralizing step to buy afterward.
The drops & the detox question
Zeolite "detox" sounds like pseudoscience. Does it work, or is it hype? +
Plenty of detox marketing is hype, and the skepticism is fair. So we hold our claims to what the evidence supports: cleansed clinoptilolite binds certain metals and toxins in your gut and carries them out, and it holds GRAS safety status. It doesn't cure anything, and we never say it does. We publish a third-party purity lab for every batch, and the 60-day guarantee covers whether it's right for you.
Won't the zeolite pull my good minerals out too? +
That's the flaw in plain zeolite, and the reason we add humic and fulvic minerals. They replace the magnesium, calcium and trace minerals as you cleanse, so you skip the cramps and fatigue that single-ingredient binders can cause.
Are the Trace mineral drops a supplement? +
No, they're a taste finisher. Filtering and reverse osmosis strip the calcium and magnesium that give water its crisp edge, and a few drops put that back. No flavor, no sweetness, no health claim. Water that stops tasting flat.
Buying from us
What's the catch with the subscription? +
There isn't one. The price you see is the price you pay whether or not you subscribe. Auto-refill exists so you don't run out, at 15% off, and you skip, pause or cancel in one click. We don't hide the deal behind a subscription you have to remember to quit.
What if it's not for me? +
Every order carries a 60-day money-back guarantee. If it isn't for you, reply to your order email and we'll make it right. Filter or bottle, used or not, with nothing to ship back.
Still stuck? Email a real person at hello@clnwater.com and you'll hear back within one business day.
